A headless electric bass with precision reverse tuners, an ergonomic choice by Laurus—one of the hallmarks of their basses, but not the only one. From the very beginning, Pierluigi Cazzola—luthier and founder of Laurus—has focused in particular on the ergonomic aspects of the instrument. Over more than forty years of practice, he has developed three main ergonomic features that make a Laurus bass one of the best electric basses on the market today. Every Laurus model is truly comfortable to play thanks to its very light weight, the shape of the neck, and more generally its balance and stability, which are praised by many professional musicians who have chosen Laurus. Since the headstock no longer needs to house traditional tuners, it can take on an innovative shape designed in harmony with the body. The body design, besides being smoothly harmonious, fits the bassist perfectly. The study of weight distribution provides a truly remarkable playing comfort. There isn’t a bassist who doesn’t find excellent comfort when playing a Laurus bass! Using the precision reverse tuners, the headstock serves only to anchor the strings, which are then tuned from the bridge. Why a headless bass? With precision reverse tuners, the headstock only locks the strings, which are then tuned from the bridge. Since it no longer needs to accommodate traditional tuners, the headstock is lighter, which slightly shifts the weight from the headstock to the body, improving the bass’s balance. Removing the traditional tuners also allowed the luthier to redesign the headstock with an innovative shape, making it even lighter while aligning its form with the body. Wood selection and neck shape: For our basses, we use various high-quality woods. The necks are laminated, built in 5–7 sections of maple and purpleheart in a neck-through-body construction. The body wings are made of kaya mahogany with a top that the musician can choose from Santos, poplar burl, quilted maple, or flamed maple. Kaya mahogany gives the body a fast response in the low frequencies. Coupled with the neck (maple and purpleheart) forming the central part of the body, the neck-through-body construction and the three types of wood create a well-balanced response across low, mid, and high frequencies, enhanced by the unique “Tone Chambers.” The headstock is also made of Kaya and is attached with a special joint and dowel, which provides greater strength compared to angled headstocks carved from the same piece as the neck. It also allows for a greater degree of tilt. Another strong point is the neck shape, which features asymmetry with a smaller radius underneath and a larger radius on top, making hand movement along the fingerboard more comfortable. Strap button position: Unlike most instruments, which have a single strap button mounted at the center of the body, Laurus basses have two buttons. This ensures that every Laurus bass is balanced and, when the strap is attached, the body remains perpendicular to the floor. This means the wrist no longer has to bend excessively during performance. This is why Laurus is one of the best electric basses on the market! --- ## Video presentation of the features of the Laurus basses URL: https://laurus.it/en/blog/video-presentation-of-the-features-of-the-laurus-basses-1038 Video presentation of the features of the Laurus basses Video presentation of the features of the Laurus basses - Audio in italian only --- ## Presentazione video dei bassi Laurus URL: https://laurus.it/it/blog/presentazione-video-dei-bassi-laurus-1038 Presentazione video dei bassi Laurus Video presentazione delle caratteristiche dei bassi Laurus --- ## Electric Bass String Change: Complete Guide & Practical Tips URL: https://laurus.it/en/blog/electric-bass-string-change-complete-guide-practical-tips-1018 Learn how to change your electric bass strings and keep your tone sharp. At the nut, the string height should match the height set at the frets. You can use simple Allen wrenches as gauges. As mentioned, about 2 mm between the top of the last fret and the string. The E and B strings can have slightly more clearance. The action (string height along the fingerboard) depends not only on the musical style but also on the strength of the player’s fretting hand. A string under higher tension will have fewer problems buzzing against the frets. For musical styles like Jazz/Fusion with many solos, thinner (softer) strings are sometimes used to allow greater expression with the right hand (or left for left-handed players). To measure the correct height at the nut (toward the fingerboard), place a 1.5 mm Allen wrench on the fingerboard (touching the wood) next to the 1st fret on the side facing the nut. All strings should just touch the wrench. This assumes the fret height is 1 mm, since the nut is always set about 0.5 mm higher than the frets. Laurus basses come with detailed instructions and photos so that anyone can keep their instrument properly adjusted. Typically, a 4-string bass is tuned, from the lowest string, to E – A – D – G at 440 Hz. A 5-string bass usually adds a low B below the E, and a 6-string bass also includes a higher string, typically a C above the standard G. Experienced musicians may choose to customize their tuning to achieve different tonal colors. When using an electronic tuner, it is recommended to play each string at the 12th fret harmonic (while muting the other strings if possible) so the tuner receives the most precise pitch. It is highly recommended to train your ear by using the tuner only on the first string (e.g., G), then checking the harmonics: the 7th fret harmonic on one string should match the 5th fret harmonic of the next lower string. For example, the 7th fret harmonic on the G string should match the 5th fret harmonic on the D string, and so on. --- ## Active or Passive Electric Bass? Complete Guide to Choosing URL: https://laurus.it/en/blog/active-or-passive-electric-bass-complete-guide-to-choosing-999 Laurus basses feature highly engineered luthiery to maximize the vibration of the woods used, and therefore they are equipped with pickups offering an hihg DR The electric bass was originally “Passive” since 1935 and remained so until the mid-1970s. In a “passive” electric bass, the “dynamics” and the tone of the pickups are fully preserved. It can be equipped with one or two pickups (Humbucker or Single Coil). The tone controls of a passive bass typically include one or two Volume knobs and one or two treble-cut controls, using a capacitor to slightly “soften” the sound. “Active” tone controls offer the convenience of shaping and equalizing the sound “directly from the instrument,” avoiding the need to adjust the amplifier, which may be in a hard-to-reach position on stage. Early active tone controls often compressed the dynamics of the pickups, limiting the musician’s expressive possibilities. Today, in high-quality basses, dynamics are better preserved. Laurus basses are available in both “Active” and “Passive” versions, switchable via the main Volume knob (Push-Pull). The “Active” option on Laurus basses has been specifically designed not to interfere with the pickups’ dynamics at all, allowing the musician maximum expressive control over the instrument. In the “Passive” mode of Laurus basses, the active tone controls (Bass-Mid-Treble) are disabled, but the treble control works in “passive” mode, together with the main Volume and the pickup balance. Active or passive electric bass is the main subject of this article, but what else is in a Laurus bass? To enhance their basses’ performance, in addition to the Active–Passive option, Laurus instruments feature highly engineered luthiery to maximize the vibration of the woods used. Consequently, Laurus chooses pickups with a very wide dynamic range, particularly sensitive and capable of “reading” the luthiery itself. Laurus prefers “non-paraffin-coated” pickups with free winding. The key characteristic is their ability to read the luthiery with great sensitivity, which, if properly balanced, allows the instrument to adapt extremely well to any musical style. Visit Nordstrand’s website for more information. Why is Laurus one of the best brands on the market? Laurus is one of the top brands because it combines the principles of classical luthiery with the latest mechanical and electronic technologies. Pierluigi Cazzola (Founder and Creator: Laurus started in 1982) studied “Tone Chambers” in depth and, in 2009, designed the “Suspended Harmonic Tops.” “It involved carving the harmonic top of the body above the Tone Chamber,” Pierluigi explains, “transforming it into a vibrating body, making the chamber resonate much more and significantly increasing the body’s sensitivity.” Laurus bass bodies come standard with two Tone Chambers: one on the upper wing of the body with the Suspended Harmonic Top, and one in the center of the body, tuned via small tubes inserted into the chamber to adjust its intonation. In the Extraharmonic model, the Suspended Harmonic Tops can be up to three, remarkably increasing sustain due to the high sensitivity of the body. What makes a Laurus electric bass a professional instrument? Its precise construction, the reliability of the mechanical components (even more performant in newer models), the high quality of the electronics, and the inclusion of premium accessories make it a highly appreciated instrument for both professional musicians and high-level amateurs. --- ## Basso elettrico, meglio attivo o passivo?
